چکیده

In an earlier paper2 we have reported results demonstrating that changing the concentrations of the carbon dioxide and oxygen with which the bloods of sheep and goats are equilibrated has a measurable effect on the total osmotic pressure of the true plasma. At constant oxygenation the osmotic pressure of the true plasma is increased 0.9 milliosmoles/Kg H20 for each millimole of C02/Kg H20 added to the whole blood. When the carbon dioxide content of the whole blood is held constant, reduction of one millimole of hemoglobin/Kg H20, (M.W. 17,000), lowers the osmotic pressure of the true plasma by circa 0.3 milliosmoles/Kg H20. From these data the effect of the exchange of the respiratory gases on the osmotic pressure of the plasma as the blood passes through the pulmonary capillaries can be calculated:

The Freezing Point Depression of Mammalian Tissues after Sudden Heating in Boiling Distilled Water

The calculated freezing point depression of freshly excised boiled mammalian tissue is approximately the same as that of plasma. The boiling procedure was chosen to eliminate the influence of metabolism on the level of the freezing point depression. Problems created by the boiling, such as equilibrium between tissue and diluent, change in activity coefficient by dilution, and loss of CO(2) cont...

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Freezing Behavior of Pure Water and 14% Water-NaCl Mixture Using the Coarse-Grained Model

We performed molecular dynamics simulations using the coarse-grained model to study the freezing behavior of pure water and 14% water-salt mixture in a wide range of temperatures for a very long time around 50 nanoseconds. For the salty water, an interface in nanoscale was used. For both systems, the f...

Sap concentrations in halophytes and some other plants.

Freezing point depression in xylem sap of mangroves was found to range from 0.05 to 0.5 degrees , in desert plants from 0.01 to 0.16 degrees . In crush juices from leaves of Batis and Salicornia, 90% or more of the freezing point depression was made up of sodium and chlorine ions; in mangroves they constituted 50 to 70%, the rest probably being organic solutes. Plants growing in seawater have -...

The Freezing Point Depression of Mammalian Tissues in Relation to the Question of Osmotic Activity of Cell Fluid

The freezing point depression of freshly excised frozen tissues, pulverized in a hydraulic press or in a mortar, is greater than that of plasma. Even at 0 degrees C. the freezing point depression of such homogenates increases significantly with time. Dilution data indicate that such freezing point data are valid. The presence of intact cells has been shown in smears of tissues pulverized in a m...

Using singlet molecular oxygen to probe the solute and temperature dependence of liquid-like regions in/on ice.

Liquid-like regions (LLRs) are found at the surfaces and grain boundaries of ice and as inclusions within ice. These regions contain most of the solutes in ice and can be (photo)chemically active hotspots in natural snow and ice systems. If we assume all solutes partition into LLRs as a solution freezes, freezing-point depression predicts that the concentration of a solute in LLRs is higher tha...

Optimization of freezing point regulator and its penetration dynamics on large yellow croaker

Different kinds of freezing-point regulators were evaluated to expand the freezing point zone of large yellow croaker, and several treatment methods such as ordinary atmospheric pressure, vacuum environment and injection during the process of penetration were compared to reveal the relationship of diffusion velocities, diffusion time and freezing point of the large yellow croaker. Results obtai...
